The East of England has a high level of road traffic compared to other regions. Bedfordshire has the most densely populated local authority in the region and the highest proportion of registered vehicles.

In 2019, 52 people were killed and 1368 injured on the roads of Bedfordshire according to the Department of Transport. This is around twice the national road casualty figure. Of those killed on the roads, pedestrian casualties accounted for 8 deaths, motorist casualties accounted for 21 deaths and motorcyclists accounted for 23 deaths. The most frequently cited causal factor for casualties between 2019 and 2020 was 'Inappropriate speed', according to the Bedfordshire and Luton Strategic Safety Plan.

In 2020, the Bedfordshire Constabulary reported that the total number of road accidents across the county decreased by 6.5%. However, serious road traffic collisions have increased by 16.3% from 2019.
