The M1 motorway is a major motorway in the United Kingdom that connects London to Leeds and is approximately 226 miles long. It was the first inter-city motorway to be built in the UK and was opened in1959.
Since its opening, the M1 motorway has seen over 8 billion vehicles passing through it and has become an important route for commercial vehicles and freight.
Safety on the M1 motorway has improved significantly over the years. In 2006, the M1 motorway had the lowest total number of casualties among all the motorways in the UK. In 2019, the number of fatalities on the M1 motorway was a third of what it had been in 2006. This suggests that the M1 motorway is becoming increasingly safe for motorists. The number of recorded accidents has also fallen. In 2019, there were 535 accidents involving injury, a reduction of almost 4% compared to the previous year.
