Wigan

Road safety in Wigan is an important issue for the local government. In 2019, Wigan Council commissioned an Innovate UK funded project to reduce the number of road collision casualties in the Wigan Borough. This work included new safety measures such as improved road markings, signage and improved pedestrian crossings.

The Wigan Council Commission reported that in 2018, Wigan had the highest number of casualties on the roads in Greater Manchester, with 86 people killed or seriously injured. Over 900 road collisions were recorded within the borough that year and in almost a third of these, pedestrians were involved. However, data from 2019 shows a 26% reduction in road casualties when compared with the previous year.

The addition of road safety measures in Wigan’s Council has also led to an increase in the number of cyclists in the borough. From 2017-2018 there was a 4.2% increase in the number of cycling trips taken in the area.
