Road traffic in and around Tamworth can be quite busy due to its proximity to Birmingham. In 2011, the town’s road network carried over 5 million vehicles.

Road safety is an important issue in Tamworth. There have been reports of an increase in drug-driving in the area, with 29 arrests in the months between October 2015 and January 2016. This was more than double the arrests made in the same area the previous year.

The number of reported road accidents in Tamworth has been steady over the past few years, with 2,342 incidents in 2017, down from 2,731 in 2016. Of these, 54% were classified as slight injuries, ranging from cuts and bruises, to whiplash, and 20% were serious injuries which included fractures, concussion and brain injury. The remaining 13% were classified as either fatalities or the injury was not known.

Tamworth Borough Council is focused on road safety initiatives. Key priorities include reducing the number of road accidents, establishing road safety education initiatives, campaigns, and enforcing speed limits. The council also aim to improve public transport options as an alternative to driving. According to the NHS, Tamworth has the lowest rate of car ownership in the West Midlands, at around 39%.
