Drivers are advised to either set out earlier than rush hour to avoid delays on one of the most busiest days of the year.

This evening (Friday 21 December) is the last working day for many in the UK, with millions of journeys undertaken on holidays, to visit friends, or just to simply get home for Christmas.

It is expected that almost three million road journeys will be made on Friday as people make their Christmas getaway, which inevitably sees delays on major routes and motorways.

Delays are expected on the M6, M25, M5 and M40 during the rush hour period, which lasts from around 4pm to 6pm - and later on some busy routes.

Traffic Update's Managing Director Chris Haycock has advised motorists to avoid the busiest times, and to leave the journey as late as possible to avoid significant delays to their journey.

"Major routes are going to be chock-a-block with huge amounts of people all trying to get to their destination in time for Christmas. It's going to get fraught on some motorways such as the M25, so always look for alternative routes where possible to avoid the traffic hotspots", he said.

"The last thing you want is to contribute to the traffic volume which will already be problematic for many. If you can, delay setting off until as late as possible into the evening. Leaving at 7pm and later should allow you to avoid the majority of the traffic."

The RAC have also said that there may be additional traffic hotspots, with delays on the M40 southbound, between the M42 in Warwickshire and Junction 8a in Oxfordshire.
