M40
The M40 motorway is a major route between Birmingham and London, connecting the two major cities of the Midlands and the South East. It was built in the 1970s to relieve traffic congestion along the A40, and it has been a major part of the UK motorway network ever since.
In terms of safety, the M40 motorway has seen an overall reduction in the number of accidents in recent years, which is due in part to the installation of average speed cameras along certain stretches of road. The motorway has been the recipient of many safety awards and is regularly cited as one of the safest motorways in the UK. This is evidenced by Department for Transport figures showing that in 2018, there were 7 fatal crashes, 27 serious crashes and 262 slight crashes reported on the entire M40 stretch.
