London Underground (The Tube)

London's underground rail system, affectionately known as 'The Tube' is the oldest underground railway network in the world. Opened to the public in 1863, it celebrated its 150th birthday on the 10th January 2013.

With almost 1.2 billion passengers using The Tube in 2011, it's the third busiest in the world. The underground comprises of 270 stations, covering 250 miles of track, of which 45% is underground.

Regular commuters have a love-hate relationship with The Tube - with many citing the inevitable delays, overcrowding and summer heat on the Tube's trains.
