M621
The M621 motorway is a major motorway located in West Yorkshire, England. It opened in 1971 and it is an extension to the M1 linking Leeds to the M62.
The M621 is an important motorway, carrying a large proportion of traffic along the east-west axis across Yorkshire. It is a wide, dual three-lane motorway, and serves as an important link to other motorways such as the M1 and M62, as well as providing access to Leeds city centre.
Since the M621 opened, there have been improvements in road safety. Average speed cameras have been installed, and the use of High-Intensity Activated Crossings (HAWKs) to reduce speeds has been successful.
Since 2011, the number of reported crashes on the M621 has been steadily decreasing. According to Department for Transport statistics, in 2019 there were just 10 reported collisions on the M621, resulting in 11 casualties, 1 of which was fatal. This is significantly lower than other motorways in the West Yorkshire area, with the M62 recording 56 collisions and 59 casualties in the same period.
