M57
The M57 motorway is located in the northwest region of England and is a 17-mile long motorway that starts in St Helens, continuing through Knowsley and Halewood and ending at the M62 motorway at Rainhill. The motorway was constructed in stages throughout the 1970s, with the first section (from St Helens to Knowsley) being completed in 1972. Following the completion of the subsequent sections, the M57 was completed in 1977.
In terms of safety, the M57 has seen a marked decrease in fatalities over the past five years. In 2015, three fatal accidents occurred on the M57, compared to just one in both 2019 and 2020. The total number of overall casualties has also decreased from 128 in 2015 to 106 in 2020. The number of reported serious casualties has also dropped from 48 to 18 over the same time period. These numbers mark a significant decrease in the number of people killed or seriously injured on the M57 each year.
