M55

The M55 motorway is an 11-mile motorway in Lancashire, England, running between the A6 and the M6 motorway. It was opened in 1970 and connects the Fylde Coast with the city of Preston.

Throughout the M55's history, the motorway has been known for its high rate of fatal, serious, and slight accidents. Since name changes in 2005, the rate of fatal and serious accidents on the M55 has seen a steady decrease. From 2005 to 2017, the number of fatal and serious accidents dropped from 33 to five, with a slight increase in slight accidents from 109 to 111.

On 1 April 2017 work began on a 43m improvement project through to the end of 2019, with the intention of reducing fatal, serious and slight accidents further. The scheme includes lane widening, drainage works and the installation of new road signs and traffic lights.
