M50

The M50 motorway in the UK was built in 1966 and was the first motorway in the country. It was constructed to connect the two main motorways that run from London to the West Midlands.

The M50 has seen many improvements and upgrades over the years, most recently the £160 million upgrade to widen and improve the stretch of motorway between Ross-on-Wye and junction 8.

Safety on the M50 is generally good, with the Transport for Wales Road Safety Observatory reporting that the motorway was 11th safest out of the 59 motorways in the UK. However, there has been an increase in fatal and serious injuries in recent years and an increase in the amount of motorway traffic.

In 2019, there were 4 fatal and 117 serious injury collisions occurring on the M50. The number of casualties had decreased compared to 2018, with 3 fatal and 145 serious injury collisions.
