M271
The M271 is a motorway in England that is located in the city of Southampton. It forms the western part of the outer ring road of Southampton and begins at the junction with the M27 J2. It continues through the west of the city and then out into the New Forest, along with the associated A31 dual carriageway.
The M271 was first proposed in 1968 and construction began in 1969, with its completion in 1971. It was originally classified as an A road and was later upgraded to a motorway in 1997.
In terms of safety, the M271 has consistently shown below-average collision rates when compared to other roads in the UK. For example, in 2017 the motorway was ranked as the ninth safest of the 99 motorways that were assessed.
